Emergency Plumber Night Rates and Weekend Prices: What Changes

Published

Emergency plumber night rates often run at one and a half to two times the daytime rate, with Sundays and bank holidays the dearest. Fewer engineers are on shift and parts merchants are shut, so some jobs can only be made safe until morning. Our call-out stays £60 at any hour, and the repair price is agreed on site.

What “24 hours” really means

A phone line that answers at 3am is not the same as an engineer who can come at 3am. Some firms run their own night shift. Others take the call and pass it to whichever contractor in their network is willing to go out, which is why the price and the person can both change between the advert and the doorstep.

When you ring out of hours, ask two things before anything else: is the engineer employed by the firm or a subcontractor, and will the price you are quoted now be the price on the invoice? A straight answer to both is a good sign. How to choose an emergency plumber covers the other checks.

How prices change after hours

Most firms that charge a premium split the week into time bands. The exact hours vary, but the pattern in London usually looks like this:

  • Weekday daytime, roughly 8am to 6pm: the standard rate.
  • Weekday evenings and Saturday daytime: often around one and a half times the standard rate.
  • Overnight, usually after 10pm or midnight: often around double.
  • Sundays: often double from start to finish.
  • Bank holidays, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day: often double or more, with a higher minimum charge.

The premium usually applies to the labour as well as the attendance fee, so a two-hour job at night can cost far more than the headline suggests. If a firm quotes you a band, ask what time the band changes. A job that runs past midnight may switch rates halfway through.

What can be fixed tonight, and what can only be made safe

Builders’ and plumbers’ merchants are closed overnight and most have short hours or close altogether on Sundays and bank holidays. At night the engineer can only fit what is on the van. That usually covers a lot:

  • Compression and push-fit fittings, stop ends and couplers in the common 15mm and 22mm pipe sizes.
  • Pipe repair clamps for a split in copper pipe that cannot be cut out tonight.
  • Isolating valves, tap washers and common tap cartridges.
  • Toilet fill valves, flush valve seals and cistern washers.
  • Fast-moving boiler parts for popular models, such as pressure relief valves, sensors and ignition electrodes.

What usually cannot be done at night is anything needing a model-specific part: a boiler printed circuit board, a gas valve, a diverter valve for a less common combi, or an unvented cylinder component. In those cases the engineer isolates the fault, leaves the system safe and, where possible, restores partial service, such as hot water from an immersion heater, until the part arrives. Ask up front whether the return visit carries a second attendance charge.

Weekends, bank holidays and Christmas

Long weekends are where night-time problems turn into multi-day ones. A boiler board ordered on the Friday of a bank holiday weekend may not arrive until the Tuesday, and over Christmas and New Year many manufacturers and distributors run a reduced service, so parts can take several working days.

The first cold snap of winter adds a second pressure. Frozen condensate pipes, split pipes in lofts and heating systems that have sat idle all summer tend to fail in the same few days, and every firm in London gets busier at once. Plumbing emergencies at Christmas has a checklist for the holiday period, including finding your stopcock and testing the boiler before you need it.

If you are going away for a weekend in winter, set the heating to a low background temperature rather than switching it off, and know where the stopcock is so a neighbour can shut it for you.

Is it cheaper to wait until Monday?

With a firm that charges time bands, yes, often by half or more, as long as waiting does not make the problem bigger. A dripping tap, a running toilet you have isolated, or one cold radiator will cost the same to fix on Monday and far less to attend. Is it an emergency or can it wait sets out which problems belong in which group.

Waiting is a false economy when water is still escaping, when a ceiling is holding water, or when someone elderly, pregnant or unwell is in a cold house. A weekend of water in a ceiling void can turn a small pipe repair into a ceiling, a floor and an insurance claim. In those cases the premium is the cheaper option.

Before you ring anyone, check whether you already have cover. Home emergency insurance and boiler cover often include night and weekend call-outs, but read the excess and any limit per claim. Whether home emergency cover is worth it weighs a policy against paying per visit.

How our night and weekend call-outs work

As a 24/7 emergency plumber in London, we do not use time bands. The call-out is £60 whether it is 11am on a Tuesday, 2am on a Sunday or Christmas morning, anywhere in London and inside the M25. The engineer makes the problem safe, finds the cause and tells you what the repair involves. The repair price is agreed with you on site before any work starts, so nothing changes because the clock passed midnight.

Gas work is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers. For water, see our 24-hour plumber service for burst pipes and leaks; for heating and hot water, emergency boiler repair. For how the charge compares with the rest of the market, plumber call-out charges explained sets out typical ranges.

Questions people ask

Do emergency plumbers charge more at night?

Many do. A common pattern is around one and a half times the daytime rate in the evening and double overnight, on Sundays and on bank holidays. Some firms, including us, charge the same at any hour.

Can a plumber get parts at night or on a Sunday?

Rarely. Merchants are shut overnight and most have short hours or close on Sundays and bank holidays. The engineer can fit what is on the van, and anything else is ordered with the job made safe in the meantime.

Is a 24-hour plumber the same as an emergency plumber?

Not always. Some firms answer the phone around the clock but only send engineers during the day, or pass night calls to subcontractors. Ask who is coming and when before you give your address.

What should I do if a pipe bursts late on a Saturday night?

Shut the stopcock first, then switch off the electrics at the consumer unit if water is near fittings and you can reach it safely. Turn off the boiler and any immersion heater, open the taps to drain the pipes, move valuables, and photograph the damage. Then decide whether it needs someone tonight or can be repaired on Monday with the water off.

Will my home insurance pay for a night call-out?

Only if you have home emergency cover as part of the policy or as an add-on. Standard buildings insurance may pay for resulting damage under escape of water, but usually not for the plumber’s visit itself.
