Baxi Boiler Repair

For Baxi boiler repair when yours has locked out, shows an E code or has stopped giving hot water, an engineer comes out day or night, reads the fault history, tests the part behind the code and agrees the repair price with you before touching it. Getting someone to you is the £60 call-out.
What the visit covers
- Reading the E code and the fault history on the display
- Low pressure (E119 or 118) and repeated ignition lockouts (E133 or 133)
- Diverter valve, fan, pump and PCB faults on 400, 600 and 800 series combis
- Scaled plate heat exchangers causing lukewarm or no hot water
- Leaving the boiler safe if a part has to be ordered
Which Baxi faults can you clear, and which need an engineer?
Baxi combis with a digital display report faults as a three-digit code: older Duo-tec, EcoBlue and Platinum models show an E first (E119), while the current 600 and 800 series show the number beside a spanner or R symbol (118). Some newer models without a display signal faults by the colour and number of flashes of the reset light instead. Either way, the code is the best clue you have, so write it down before you do anything else.
A handful come up far more often than the rest. E119 (118 on the current 600 and 800 series) means the system pressure has fallen too low for the boiler to run. E133 means the burner failed to light after several attempts and the boiler has locked itself out. E125 points at poor circulation in the heating side, usually the pump or a blockage. E160 is a fan fault. Our Baxi fault codes guide covers every code, and how to reset a Baxi boiler covers the lockouts.
How do I reset a Baxi boiler safely?
A few checks are yours to make. Anything behind the front casing is not, and that includes the pressure switch, the fan and the gas valve.
- Pressure gauge: with the boiler cold it should sit around 1 to 1.5 bar, and Baxi tells owners to top up once it drops below about 0.7 bar. A reading near zero explains E119; top it up with the filling loop underneath, as in our Baxi boiler pressure guide.
- Gas supply: if the hob lights and the prepayment meter has credit, the gas is reaching the house.
- Condensate pipe: in a hard frost the plastic pipe outside can freeze and cause an E133 lockout. Warm water (not boiling) poured along it often clears it.
- Reset: press the reset button once for about a second (holding longer can stop newer models resetting), or on older models turn the selector to R for about five seconds. If the same code returns, stop there; repeated resets can hide a fault that needs attention.
If you smell gas, do not reset anything. Open windows, turn off at the meter if it is safe to reach, keep away from switches, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from outside.
No hot water but the heating works
This is the most common Baxi complaint that does not come with a code. On a combi, a diverter valve sends hot water either to the radiators or to the taps. When it sticks, or its actuator head fails, the taps stay cold while the radiators heat normally.
The other usual cause is the plate heat exchanger. London water is hard, and scale builds up in the narrow plates until the tap water comes out lukewarm or surges hot and cold. The engineer can tell the two apart by checking whether the boiler fires on a hot tap demand and what temperature reaches the outlet. There is more on this in Baxi boiler no hot water.
How much does a Baxi boiler repair cost?
Market prices across the UK in 2026 give a fair guide. A pressure relief valve or a recharged expansion vessel usually lands between £80 and £200 fitted. A diverter valve or fan tends to run £200 to £400. A PCB is the dearer end at around £350 to £700, and a main heat exchanger can pass £600, which is the point to weigh repairing or replacing the boiler.
These are typical market ranges, not a quote. The repair price is agreed with you on site before any work starts, so you can say no and pay only the £60 call-out. If your Baxi is still inside its manufacturer warranty, ring Baxi first, as an outside repair may affect the cover.
When a Baxi fault cannot wait
Call tonight if the boiler is leaking water near the electrics, if an E133 keeps returning with a working gas supply, if there is anyone vulnerable in the house without heat in cold weather, or if you see soot, yellow flames or a CO alarm. For a CO alarm, open windows, switch the boiler off, get everyone outside and call 0800 111 999 before anything else, then get medical advice.
Gas work is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers. The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 require anyone paid to work on a gas appliance in your home to be on the Gas Safe Register, so the casing stays shut until one arrives.
How the visit works
Tell us the code
The number on the display and what the boiler was doing when it stopped narrows the likely parts before we set off.
Diagnosis on site
The engineer checks the gas supply, pressure and flue first, then tests the component the code points at.
Price agreed first
You get the repair figure and approve it before any work starts.
Tested before we leave
Heating and hot water are run through a full cycle and the combustion reading is checked after any gas-side work.

Questions people ask
How do I reset a Baxi boiler?
Press the reset button on the front panel, holding it for about five seconds on models that need it, and wait for the boiler to try again. On older models you turn the selector to R, or the temperature knob fully anticlockwise, and hold it there. If it locks out again with the same code, leave it off and book a repair.
Why does my Baxi keep showing E119?
E119 is low system pressure. If topping up clears it but it comes back within days, water is escaping somewhere: a weeping pressure relief valve, a leaking radiator valve, or a failed expansion vessel pushing water out when the system heats up.
Can a Baxi boiler be repaired at night?
Yes. Most faults can be diagnosed on the first visit whatever the hour. If a part has to be ordered, the engineer leaves the boiler safe and agrees a return visit to fit it.
Is it worth repairing an old Baxi?
Usually yes for pressure, valve, fan and pump faults. When a boiler over about twelve years old needs a heat exchanger or a second major part in a year, replacement often makes more sense. The engineer will tell you which side of that line it sits.
My Baxi shows a flashing radiator symbol. What does that mean?
On its own it is not a fault code, and what it signals varies by model, so check your user guide. If an E code is showing alongside it, go by the code and check the pressure gauge first. Our guide to the Baxi radiator symbol explains the variations.
