Vaillant F61 Fault Code: Gas Valve Circuit Fault

F61

What it means

F.61 means the boiler has found a fault in the circuit that drives its gas valve, so it has shut the gas off and locked out. The cause is in the valve, its wiring or the control board, all inside the casing.

Safe to check yourself

  • Press the reset button once and let the boiler try to restart
  • Check the fused spur next to the boiler is on and its fuse has not blown
  • Check whether the boiler was recently flooded, leaked on or had a condensate spill from above
  • Note the exact code and when it appeared (on demand, mid-run, after a power cut) for the engineer

Call an engineer if

  • F.61 comes back after one reset
  • You can see water on or under the boiler, which can short the gas valve wiring
  • The boiler clicks or trips the fuse spur when it tries to fire
  • You smell gas: open windows, turn the gas off at the meter if it is safe, use no switches, then leave the property and call 0800 111 999 from outside

Vaillant fault code F61 means the boiler has detected a fault in the gas valve control circuit and locked out to stay safe. It is an electrical fault in the gas valve, its wiring loom or the main control board. One reset is reasonable; if F.61 returns, the repair needs a Gas Safe engineer.

What is a Vaillant boiler checking when it shows F61?

The gas valve on an ecoTEC opens and closes the gas path using electrically driven solenoid coils, and the control board powers and monitors that circuit. If the board detects a short circuit, a leak to earth or a coil that is not behaving as it should, it will not risk opening the gas. It shows F.61 and locks out.

Vaillant's installation and servicing manual for the ecoTEC plus lists the likely causes in this order: a short circuit or earth leak in the cable harness to the gas valve, a defective gas valve assembly (such as an earth leak from a solenoid coil), or a defective electronic control board. That is useful because it tells you F.61 is almost never about your gas supply, your pressure or your thermostat.

One detail worth knowing: F.61 is not on Vaillant's public homeowner fault code list, which covers the more common codes. The definition above comes from the installer manual, which is the document an engineer works from.

Is it safe to reset a Vaillant showing F61?

One reset is fine. Press the reset button, wait for the boiler to run through its start-up and see whether it fires. A single glitch, such as a brief power dip or a loose connector that has settled, can clear on a reset and never return.

If F.61 comes straight back, stop there. Repeated resets do not cure an electrical fault, and each attempt energises a circuit the boiler has already told you is not behaving. Switch the boiler off at the fused spur and leave it until an engineer can look. Our Vaillant reset guide covers where the button is on each model.

Do not remove the front panel to look at the gas valve or wiring. Everything that causes F.61 sits behind the casing, and work on a gas valve must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998.

Why does F61 often follow a leak or a power problem?

Water and electrics are the usual story. A weeping pipe joint, a dripping pressure relief valve or a leak from a flat upstairs can run down inside the casing and onto the gas valve connector. The fault may clear as it dries out and then come back the next time it gets wet. If you spot drips or staining, our guide to a boiler leaking from underneath helps you describe what you have seen.

Power surges and lightning can damage the control board, and a board that has failed in one area may show F.61 alongside other odd behaviour. If your boiler also shows F28 ignition failures or resets itself, mention it. A pattern of several codes helps the engineer decide whether to test the board or the valve first.

What does the engineer do, and what does it cost?

The engineer isolates the power, then tests the gas valve coils for resistance and for insulation to earth, and checks the harness from the valve back to the board for chafing, corrosion or a loose plug. That test sequence separates the three causes in the manual without guessing. If the valve and harness test clean, the board is the suspect.

A harness or connector repair is usually the cheapest outcome. A replacement gas valve for an ecoTEC plus typically costs somewhere around £150 to £350 as a genuine part from trade suppliers, before labour, and the engineer must carry out a gas tightness test and check the combustion afterwards. A new main board is usually the dearer option. On an older boiler, weigh that against our notes on whether to repair or replace a broken boiler.

If you need someone tonight, Vaillant boiler repair is available 24/7 across London and inside the M25 for the £60 call-out, and the repair price is agreed with you on site before work starts. Gas work is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers.

Questions people ask

Can I use my heating with F61 showing?

No. F.61 is a lockout, so the burner will not light for heating or hot water until the fault clears. If a reset brings the boiler back, it is safe to use, but book a check if the code ever returns.

Is F61 a gas leak?

Not on its own. It is an electrical fault in the gas valve control circuit. If you can also smell gas, treat that as a separate emergency: open windows, turn off at the meter if safe, avoid switches, get outside and call 0800 111 999.

Is F61 the same as F62 on a Vaillant?

No. F.61 is the board failing to control the gas valve. F.62 is the valve being told to close and the flame taking too long to go out. Both involve the gas valve, but they are tested and fixed differently.
